PEŞTELE DE LA CAP SE-MPUTE - Cristina Tonca
The title is a Romanian proverb. Denotative translation: “THE FISH STARTS TO ROT FROM THE HEAD.” The connotative translation: “IN A COMMUNITY, SOCIETY CORRUPTION STARTS AT THE TOP, WITH THE LEADERS.” Stop motion animation film made entirely by Cristina Tonca.
The Grip and The Cage - Victoria Cieutat
The Grip follows the oppressive rhythm of the music the illustrate the hold of one person over another. The images follow one another quickly, reflecting the loss of control of the character, trapped in a repetitive loop. Reality is altered, each attempt to escape the influence of the other failing. The grip is symbolized by drowning, which stifles the screams and blocks the woman's ears: overwhelmed, she loses all control.
The Cage explores the feeling of emptiness through long zooms in and out. However, here, the rhythm is marked by fast shots, reflecting the simultaneity of the passing of time. Conceived as a painting in motion, these shots create overflowing spaces that seem to engulf the character, plunging the viewer into a disturbed environment.
Tales of Drakendiep - The Witches Path - Maurice Schaack en Isidora Jurisic
King Leopold has been cursed by witches, and to break the spell, he sends his son, Prince Mylan, on a quest to destroy the witches' Moon Crystal. Accompanied by his loyal friend, the knight Sir Gabriel, the prince embarks on a journey through strange lands and encounters mysterious people—until he is ultimately faced with a life-altering choice.
TRUBLADO - Gwen Waisfisz, Sterre Doeleman, Sara Aleixo, Iona Fokkens
Trublado is a perspective of a being that is narrowed into man-made red walls. The surreal atmosphere blurs the line between what is seen and what is felt. Time does not pass, but is forced to contract. This is an abstract short film in which horror and beauty go hand in hand.
Praise of friendship - Lilyrose Mauger
Above all, I speak of friendship. What I try to show in my films is what I see in my friends: their uniqueness, their energy, their way of being together. All my friendships are different, but they share certain forms of comfort; whether it’s shared references, calming silences, or the complicity of play. Often, it’s made up of tiny details, almost invisible to an outside eye, but to me, they say everything. It’s that particular light in each person that I try to capture and translate.
Romulus is the only scripted animation I’ve made, inspired by a conversation about a symbolic figure from my hometown. Through its story and deliberately fantastical ending, I leave room for interpretation: does Romulus truly cross into a parallel world, or is it a mental refuge, a comforting space he imagines for himself?
By contrast, Valencia is based on spontaneous recording, a method I’m deeply attached to. Filmed on a Spanish beach during a somewhat absurd wait before returning to France, it shows a friend singing a reworked version of Quand on arrive en ville, playfully resisting the return to our Parisian routine.
Finally, Sandwich continues this intention to capture the spontaneity and dynamic of the group: tension builds, personalities emerge, the shots draw closer, but everything ends in a shared moment of complicity; a knowing code that speaks to both intimacy and play, and the bond that carries on.
When? Wednesday the 25th of June at 20.30.
