Usva’s Bookclub Cafe invites you to read, discuss, and get a taste of…Carmilla!
Do you dare take our hand, and let us lead you into the shadows? For this Halloween edition of Bookclub Cafe, our participants are stepping into the chilling world of Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. Published 25 years before Bram Stoker’s Dracula, in 1872, this gothic vampire novella follows Laura and Carmilla, two young women whose intense and strange bond starts blurring the line between affection and obsession.
But what lies beneath the vampire story? Join us in our exploration of the novella’s deeper themes of desire, female identity, and how they reflect Victorian anxieties surrounding shifting social norms. Following our discussion, we’ll also host a Carmilla-inspired costume contest & decide on the book we’ll be reading for our December edition of Bookclub Cafe.
Practical Information
For this edition, the participants must have completed the assigned reading of Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu in order to join.
Also specific to this edition is a costume contest, inspired by the book we are reading. Participants are encouraged to be as creative as possible in choosing their costume, whether that means taking inspiration from the actual characters, the novella’s gothic atmosphere, or its broader themes!
The winner will be determined through a vote among the participants!
